Podbiel Village
Podbiel is a village in Orava in northern Slovakia.

"Bobrova Raľa" in the Orava village of Podbiel is the largest preserved complex of original folk architecture in Central Europe. The original wooden houses, which visitors have the opportunity to see, date from the mid-19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. The village was first mentioned in 1556.

They are embedded in the beautiful mountain nature, which together with them completes the picturesque, almost fairy-tale character of the village. Most of the wooden houses are currently no longer inhabited, some are used for recreational purposes.

The houses are built in a typical two-row street with a triangular square around the church. The development of houses is in depth, starting with an open yard towards the road, then two or three houses follow one another. They are followed by farm buildings, which enclose the yard with a barn. Bubrovnícka farmstead was mentioned in the urban register from 1626 as one of the nine Wallachian farmsteads. The oldest preserved dwelling is house number 115 – 116, the creation of which dates back to 1833.

Due to their spatial division, typical folk houses in Podbiel belong to the Central Slovak wooden house type, widespread in the northern part of northern Slovakia. Most houses were four-roomed. In Podbiel, it was not unusual in the past for two families to live together in one house, each having its own room and a common kitchen with a den.

The basic building material of every house and farm building is wood, while the houses are built on stone foundations. Most of the houses have preserved the original beamed ceilings, the joints are stuffed with moss. The roofs are steep gabled, originally covered with shingles, finished with gables. In most dwellings, the shield wall has two joined windows. The character of the village is completed by potato pits and rocking wells.
