Slovakia became an independent state on 1 January 1993 after the peaceful dissolution of Czechoslovakia, sometimes referred to as the Velvet Divorce.

Smolenice Castle was built in the 15th century, but it was destroyed during Rákóczi's War of Independence and the Napoleonic wars. In 1777, Count János Pálffy from Pezinok inherited Smolenice but did not reside in the castle due to its poor condition and lack of money for rebuilding it. This castle was only rebuilt in the 20th century.

This lovely fountain sits right in front of the Grassalkovich Palace. A beautiful Baroque building built in 1760 as a summer residence of Count Anton Grassalkovich. Today it is sometimes referred to as Slovakia’s White House as it is the official residence for the President of Slovakia. This fountain was built during the communist era in 1982.

Slovak Karst National Park, Domica Cave, Slovakia. Domica Cave is the most known and longest cave of the Slovak Karst National Park. As a special experience the Domica cave offers to its visitors an attractive boat trip on its underground river. Domica is part of Caves of Aggtelek Karst and Slovak Karst, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Gombasek Cave or Gombasecká jaskyňa and Gombaszögi-barlang is a karst cave in the Slovak Karst, Slovakia. Since 1995, the Gombasek Cave is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Vlkolínec, Slovakia: Vlkolínec, situated in the centre of Slovakia, is a remarkably intact settlement of 45 buildings with the traditional features of a central European village. It is the region’s most complete group of these kinds of traditional log houses, often found in mountainous areas. Vlkolínec is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Spiš Castle in eastern Slovakia seems to rise from the rocks on which it sits. The castle dates from the 12th century when the area was part of the Old Hungarian feudal state. But in 1780, it was destroyed by fire and fell into ruin. In 1993 it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Halič Castle in Halič, Slovakia, was built by Žigmund Forgách in 1612. Since 1993 the castle was abandoned and left without an owner, it started to deteriorate, in 2005, the castle was privatized and after 10 years of reconstruction works, the national cultural monument – Renaissance-Baroque castle in Halič opened its gates in 2016.

Bratislava Castle and St Martin՚s Cathedral. One of the capital’s most frequented landmarks is the St. Martin’s Cathedral, constructed in the Gothic style and consecrated in 1452. This architectural marvel is integral to the most exquisite Baroque structures, including the Chapel of St. John the Merciful and the statue of St. Martin. Notably, between 1563 and 1830, 11 Hungarian kings and 7 royal wives were crowned here.

Ždiar Museum, Slovakia. The Museum Ždiar House was established in 1971 by the municipality Ždiar under the initiative of local people. You can familiarize yourself with the way of life of Gorals living under the foot of the Belianske Tatras. It represents the original architecture, interior, folk costumes. All of this is accompanied with a rich verbal presentation. The museum offers the possibility to dress the local costume, to have a photo taken and to take part in the folk ceremony “Ždiar wedding”.

Dobšinská Ice Cave, Slovakia, In the south-western edge of the Slovak Paradise Mts. is the Dobšinská ľadová jaskyňa (Dobšinská Ice Cave), one of the largest ice caves in Europe is open to public since 1880´s. From 2000 it is included on the List of UNESCO Natural World Heritage. The annual temperature average in cave stays around 0°C. The age of the cave is estimated at approximately 250,000 years.

Renaissance Belfry in Kežmarok, Slovakia. The Renaissance belfry of 1568, which is the oldest and certainly one of the most beautiful in the Spiš region.
Basilica Minor, Kežmarok, Slovakia. The present-day appearance of the church building comes from a magnificent Gothic reconstruction in the years 1444 to 1498. The church has three naves and a rarity is the triple vault – reticulated, star-shaped and cross-shaped. The statue of the crucified Christ from today's main altar is the creation of Master Pavol from Levoča, whose work is included in the UNESCO list of monuments.

Monastery in Velka Skalka, Slovakia. Skalka near Trenčín is the ruin of a monastery (so-called Veľká Skalka) in the cadastral territory of the village of Opatová nad Váhom in the Trenčín district. It is the oldest pilgrimage site in Slovakia. It also includes a smaller cave complex, near the Váh River. According to legend, the hermit St. Benedict lived in the cave. The monastery was probably founded in the 12th century.

Trenčín Castle and Trenčín Synagogue in Trenčín, Slovakia. The name of this fountain refers to a Vodnik, which is a type of Slavic male water spirit with the body of a man and the face of a frog. The fountain has an innovative and creative design. The centrepiece of the fountain is a sculpture of a well and a Vodnik has climbed over the top, spitting water from his mouth.

Piarist Church of St. Francis Xaversky in Trenčín, Slovakia. Founded by the Jesuits in 1649, the church’s cornerstone was laid in 1653. The Jesuit, later Piarist Church of St. Francis Xaverský. You can admire its beautiful interior including the paintings on walls and six side chapels.
Orava Village Museum in Northern Slovakia. Orava Village Museum in Zuberec located in beautiful natural surroundings of Rohace Mountains tries to illustrate a living of people in Orava region in the past. Visitors can see more than 50 houses and several other buildings of folk architecture. Towering above the whole village, the wooden Gothic church from the early 15th century is a real gem of the open-air museum.

The Church of Holy Spirit Žehra was built in the 13th century in late Romanesque style and is listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List (since 1993 as part of Spiš castle and Levoča region). Most valuable monuments in the church wall paintings, forming a complex of iconographic cycle. They cover whole presbytery, Arch of triumph and the whole northern wall. The oldest paintings are from the end of the 13th century or in the 14th century. Artistically most valuable is painting of the presbytery.

Ľubovňa Castle and an open-air folk museum in Northeastern Slovakia. Ľubovňa Castle was built at the turn of the 13th – 14th century. The first written mention dates back to 1311. In 1412, King Sigismund of Hungary and King Władysław Jagiellon of Poland met at the castle and signed an agreement of friendship and peace.

Súľovské skaly is an attractive rock town located in the northwestern part of Slovakia, just a few kilometers from Žilina. Interesting relief shapes in the form of rock towers, needles, windows and gates separated by deep waterless gorges, ravines and valleys are the result of the action of external factors (rain, ice, wind-chemical and mechanical weathering) on the very malleable and easily workable material represented by conglomerates.

The ruins of Devín Castle is one of the oldest castles in Slovakia. Medieval castle Devín (12 to 16 century) is national cultural monument. It stands on a hill - 212 m above the sea level. It was built on a place of Roman building and Great Moravian fortified settlement. In 864 it was know as Dowina. In 1809 the Napoleonic troops blew up the castle. Today, you can find an archeological museum here.

Bytča Wedding Palace Banská Bystrica Region, Slovakia. It was built in 1601 by Juraj Turzo near Bytča manor house. It was intended to serve as wedding receptions for his daughters. Not only weddings were organised there. In the first half of the 17th century, it was used as a storage of salt, grain and other crops.
Pozdrav z Trnava (Greetings from Trnava) Trnava is a city in western Slovakia, 47 km to the northeast of Bratislava, on the Trnávka river. Founded in the 7th century, Trnava received civic privileges in 1238. Its position north of the limit of Ottoman conquest in the 16th century was important to both Hungarian and Slovak cultural institutions seeking refuge from Turkish rule.

Hlavná ulica (Main Street) in historic downtown, Kosice, southeastern Slovakia. Košice developed rapidly after it became a part of Czechoslovakia in 1920. In 1938 the city was occupied by the Hungarians; after liberation in 1945, it became the first seat of the postwar Czechoslovakian government and of the Slovak National Council. Šafařík University (1959) and several scientific and research institutes were founded in the city in the decades after World War II.
The Beniczky House in Banská Bystrica, Slovakia. The medieval house on the main square, as evidenced by the keystone of the Renaissance gate, which is still visible today, was rebuilt into a city palace in 1660 by Tamás Beniczky. The gate, the sgraffito decoration of the facade and the Italian loggia dominate the external appearance of the building, which harmoniously fits it into the row of other Renaissance-looking buildings on the square.

Postcard of Banská Bystrica. The castle was a part of the former fortification of the city of Banská Bystrica. In the castle there is a church from the 13th century. The fortification was built in 1480-1510 and it was later rebuilt in a Baroque style. The Central Slovak Gallery and the Central Slovak Museum have exhibits here.

Wooden churches of the Slovak Carpathians Mountain Area is the name of a UNESCO World Heritage Site that consists of nine wooden churches in Slovakia. The churches, built between the 16th and 18th centuries, are located in eight different locations in Slovakia. In addition to these churches there are about 50 more wooden churches in the territory of present-day Slovakia. None of the listed churches are on this postcard.
Wooden church Mikulášová - Open air museum in Bardejov - is located on the edge of the Bardejov Spa in north-eastern Slovakia. The wooden Greek Catholic church of Mikulášová dedicated to the Intercession of the Theotokos was originally built in 1730. The church was relocated in 1931 to Bardejovské Kúpele (Bardejov Spa), located 6 kilometers north of Bardejov.
Pribylina is a village in Liptovský Mikuláš District in the Žilina Region of northern Slovakia, at the foot of Kriváň, Slovakia's symbolic and often considered most beautiful mountain. In historical records the village was first mentioned in 1286.

Zichy Mansion - Museum of the History of the Divín Municipality in Banská Bystrica Region, Slovakia. The Renaissance manor house, which stands under the castle hill, was built in 1670.
Zvolen, Slovakia. (Top right) Zvolen Castle, Slovakia, built in 1382, It was built in style of Italian Castles. Later in 16th century was reconstructed by Italian masters to renaissance style. (Bottom right) The armored train Hurban was an armoured train used during World War II, during the Slovak National Uprising in 1944. A replica is displayed as a monument in a park next to the castle in Zvolen, and an original preserved machine gun carriage is at the Museum of the Slovak National Uprising in Banská Bystrica.

Humenné Mansion in Humenné, Slovakia. There is a mansion house on its place which was built in 1610 in a Renaissance style. At the end of the 19th century rebuilt in a Baroque style. It was renovated in 1972. Now there is an ethnographic museum.

Dubliner Irish Pub Bratislava was opened in 1996 and very quickly became a popular place for our and foreign visitors to the city. It has enriched the center of Bratislava's Old Town with unique Irish entertainment. Approximately 15,000 Slovak citizens currently live in Ireland. There are many Irish-born children now living in Slovakia after their parents returned home.
