New Postcards of Slovakia From the early 1990s to early 2020s.  Slovakia became an independent state on 1 January 1993 after the peaceful dissolution of Czechoslovakia, sometimes referred to as the Velvet Divorce. Last update: December 26, 2025. Bratislava Castle , Slovakia, Postcard. Built in 9th century–18th century. It's a great view of the four towered Bratislava Castle, which overlooks the Danube river. The original was destroyed in a fire in 1811. It was finally reconstructed in the 1960's.
